La Fab (Grace Church Rehabilitation) | A creative hub for visual and performing arts
Built in 1875, Grace Church in Chelsea, Quebec, has stood for nearly 150 years as a community anchor. Juxta Architects was commissioned by La Fab sur Mill to lead a multi-phase rehabilitation, beginning with a comprehensive conservation strategy approved by the CPRQ. The first phase transformed the 1950s church addition into vibrant cultural spaces — five artist studios, a shared work area, classroom, gallery, and kitchen — while discreetly reinforcing the century-old timber floor structure and maximizing natural light in basement spaces. Historic church windows were even repurposed as interior features, connecting old and new.
The second phase brought the historic church back to life, restoring wood doors, replacing failing siding and incompatible vinyl windows with era-accurate replicas, and upgrading the envelope for better thermal performance — all while protecting its heritage character. Inside, the church hall was revitalized as a performance space with preserved acoustics, improved lighting, and an upgraded stage, alongside the creation of a pottery studio and kiln room. The result is a rejuvenated heritage landmark that now serves as a hub for arts, performance, and community life.
